Treasure Chests can be earned for completing quests , found while mining at or below 40KM, and can be bought using ticket.

Quest Chests

As of V0.53 there are 17 possible chests to obtain from Quests:

4 Basic Treasure Chests from Quests 1 through 4, from the questmaster.

4 Decent Treasure Chests from Quests 5 through 8, from the questmaster.

3 Good Treasure Chests from Quests 9 through 11, from the questmaster.

2 Great Treasure Chests from Quest 12 and 13, from the questmaster.

2 Awesome Treasure Chests from Quest 14 and 15, from the questmaster
2 Golden Treasure Chests from Quest 1 and 5, from the right tower in the Underground City

Treasure Chests

Treasure Chests can be found while mining at or below 40KM. Upgrade your drill to speed up the time it takes to get to this level. If a worker finds a chest, he will hold it above his head for 10 minutes. The player then has to click on the chest before it despawns. The deeper the chest is found the greater likelihood of it having greater loot. Cost 1 ticket.

Loot

Rewards depend on the depth of the floor on which you found the chest. Chests have their maximum value at 570km.

Golden Treasure Chests

Golden chests are golden colored and give better rewards. They are very rare. Golden Chests are also a reward from quest 1 and 5 at the Underground City.

Money reward equation for Golden Chest is depth*depth*depth*(depth*.2)*10*(1+(Math.random()*7))

For example if you your are at a depth of 100km the minimum amount of money would be 200 000 000 and maximum amount would be 1 600 000 000.

Spawn timing

There is no way to predict exactly when the next chest spawn. However, you can make a best guess approximation and measure average time. Spawn rate depends strongly on maximun depth you have achieved. It is also affected by activity in game, if you click or scroll few times in every 30 second you have slightly higher change to spawn a chest.

In this table there are calculated average times between chest spawns. For example it will take about 11 hours to spawn next golden chest at depth of 100km. But time may vary from 2000 minutes to 40 hours. That's why golden chests are so rare. Also there are possibility that regular Treasure chest will spawn on Golden chest and Golden one will dissapear.

Currently, in v0.54, chest will despawn in 48 to 96 minutes, but in source code there are author's notes that say he will change this back to ~10 minutes.
