Resources are used for upgrades, either directly through blueprints or through converting them into money.
Minerals are limited, and isotopes are capped, by capacity.
Oil is capped, too, though you can get a little overcapacity.
The rest of the resources are not capped or limited in any way. You can get as many as you want.
